What We Do
Our Mission
Our mission is to ensure that justice begins where inequality ends. Litigants throughout America appear in federal courts without an attorney to fight discrimination every year, and the growing number of self-represented litigants—particularly those who have low income and limited means–concerns us. That is why as strong advocates for justice, equality and civil rights, we launched On My Own Project, which provides meaningful access to the civil justice system, especially for those who have low incomes, limited means, or are members of marginalized groups or protected classes.
We make navigating through the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) processes, and the courts more user friendly and accessible to people without lawyers or other support. As a socially responsible business looking to keep our communities informed, we educate the public on topics from how to file complaints with the EEOC and HUD to maneuvering through the court system. Our services are free of charge.
Although our primary focus is employment and housing discrimination, we advocate for those who have experienced discrimination in any form. This includes assisting pro se pretrial litigants who have lawsuits in federal district and appeals courts and/or cases they have before their state’s Department of Human Rights and Human Rights Commission, with pro bono referrals.
Additionally, to provide employees with fair and just opportunities to present their discrimination claims in federal court, we also strive to improve procedures and remedies available to them by engaging with other civil rights groups and other nonprofit and advocacy organizations—locally and nationally–in an effort to draft new and amend current federal laws which will make it less difficult to prove certain forms of discrimination in court.
